Day 13 My pick for today is: Snowy White “Live at Rock Palast” Snowy White’s real name is Terence Charles White. He was born on March 3 1948. He is an English guitarist. He is known for playing with Thin Lizzy and Pink Floyd as a backing guitarist. White is also known as a solo artist. He made his way to London and met Peter Green and began a life long friendship. He also appeared on Greens album “In The Sky”. White recorded five albums with his band The White Flames. White also toured with Roger Waters in “The Wall Live”. Snowy White is one of the UK’s most acclaimed and accomplished guitarist. He also appeared with Al Stewart, Cockney Rebel, Cliff Richard, and many others.
Hi Melanie! Another deep dig
#1 Mastodon - Once More Round the Sun #2 Voyager - V #3 Sienna Root - Pioneers
American Dog ... Neanderthal Martin Popoff is a fan of American Dog, and maybe you should be too. American Dog is led by Michael Hannon, formerly of the major label act Salty Dog, and he had a beer with Dangerous Toys with his trusty bass. Here, Hannon is also the singer. Hannon was a panelist in Popoff's AC/DC Album by Album book. American Dog is a biker rock band with a dash of Nugent , Motorhead, and other classic bands, but especially his late fellow Columbus Ohio mentor and friend Eric Moore and The Godz. Appropriately, they use a Frank Frazetta drawing for the album cover here. You may probably know Frazetta for his classic Molly Hatchet album cover drawings. The Comic Book Geezers here know Frazetta for his comic book art. I like the liner notes where we get into the spirit of their rock and roll here..... "It's a nasty little bastard full of tales about sex, booze, death and rock and roll!!!" Among the great original tunes here is a cover of Ted Nugent's Dog Eat Dog. That fact helps give you the proper attitude for approaching this album. Hannon has apparently largely retired American Dog in recent years as a recording act. He appears to be running a rock club in the Columbus area. Now that's a place for me to check out if I find myself down there.
Respected pick with Magnum, Pete. I own a couple of their albums.
My picks so far ... 1) California Breed ... Self-Titled 2) Nashville Pussy ... Up the Dosage 3) American Dog ... Neanderthal
Great pick, Pete! Very quickly, here's my pick for today before I head off to Cologne to see Tool in concert tonight. My number 13 Elephants of Scotland - Execute and Breathe Progressive Rock from Vermont, this is their second album. 14 The Vintage Caravan - Voyage 15 Archspire - The Lucid Collective
Magnum is another awesome band with a great album pick for today thanks again Pete and can't wait for the next one. 🎵🎼🎤🎸🎸🎹🎹🥁🎼🎶
#13- Gov't Mule - Dark Side of the Mule Beautiful tribute to Pink Floyd. Going through different eras and songs from the varied discography of these rock monsters. Albums That Are 10 Years Old in 2024 #13- Gov't Mule - Dark Side of the Mule #14- Sleaford Mods - Divide and Exit #15- The Flaming Lips - With a Little Help from My Fwends
Day 3 (#13) Ryan Adams - S/T 14. Judas Priest - Redeemer of Souls 15. Interpol - El Pintor
1000MODS - Vultures
#13 Drive By Truckers - English Oceans Drive By Truckers have never made a bad album, and English Oceans was easily the band's best work since The Dirty South. Most of the tunes were penned by Mike Cooley, and all of them are high quality. There are several Stones-like rockers (especially "Shit Shots Count"), mixed with several plaintive Patterson Hood ballads ("When Walter Went Crazy"). After a few listens the melodies are impossible to escape. One can also expect fantastic lyrical imagery. Every facet of English Oceans is superior to the last few albums that preceded it. Also worth noting is the production. It's a bit more raw, with less emphasis on organ than on some earlier releases. Ten albums and eighteen years on from their first show Drive By Truckers showed they were still capable of mixing things up, and that's certainly the case with English Oceans, which shows them making wise use of all their talents. It's an instant classic and one of the best albums of 2014. Favorite Tracks: "Shit Shots Count" "Made Up English Oceans" "When He's Gone" "When Walter Went Crazy" "Grand Canyon" #13 Drive By Truckers - English Oceans #14 Ace Frehley - Space Invader #15 Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern Sounds In Country Music
The Take Off And Landing Of Everything by Elbow.
Day 3 pick is Play All Night Live At The Beacon Theatre march 10 and 11 1992 by The Allman Bros. Released on Epic records this one had Greg Allman on organ piano acoustic guitar and vocals. Dickie Betts lead and rhythm guitar acoustic acoustic slide and vocals. Jaimoe drums. Butch Trucks drums and tympani. Warren Haynes lead and rhythm guitar slide and acoustic guitar vocals. Allen Woody bass. Mark Quinones conga and percussion and Tom Doucette harmonica. A 2 cd set 16 total songs among them are Statesboro Blues. You Dont Love Me. Low Down Dirty And Mean Midnight Rider. Jessica. In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed and Whipping Post. Another great show by the brothers.
Today`s pick: Syd Arthur - "Sound Mirror". Second album by this band from Canterbury. Just like their forebears from the 60`s and 70`s, they mix pop, psych, prog and jazz, but in an updated version. You wouldn`t mistake them for Caravan or Soft Machine though, they`ve got an original sound and style that might look back for inspiration, but it`s totally modern.
Hi Pete. Dave here. Haven't got many 2014 picks, but here's one of them. it's SPARKS by IMOGEN HEAP. She's probably best known to rock fans as working with Jeff Beck, but she's an innovative singer songwriter, always pushing the boundaries, and on this album I love the multi=layered soundscapes and harmonies, fused with electro pop and world music. Hints of Kate Bush at times. Favourite tracks Cycle Song and Lifeline. Has also written film scores, and the soundtrack to the Harry Potter stage show.
In My Soul - The Robert Cray Band
Today's pick: "Cloud Factory" by the Ukrainian metal band Jinjer.
My #3: Taylor Swift - 1989 For all you "swifties" on this channel, like myself.
Hi folks, my 3rd pick of 2014 takes us squarely back into the realms of metal once again, a modern band but with a very traditional approach and, as with my pick on day 1 (of 2014 that is) we are faced with a visually striking young lady at the microphone, but there's nothing particularly operatic about this one... KOBRA AND THE LOTUS "High Priestess" (Spinefarm, produced by Johnny K) This is the 3rd studio album by this Canadian metal outfit, fronted by Kobra Paige and also featuring Jasio Kulakowski on guitars, Brad Kennedy on bass and Griffin Kissack on drums. The production by Johnny K (Machine Head, Disturbed, Megadeth et al) is very crisp, quite modern sounding and the songs are mostly within the 3 - 4/4.5 minute range, with only a couple of exceptions. Opening brace Warhorse and I Am I Am are a good blueprint for the band's sound, short, sharp riffs and staccato drumming, but with Kobra's powerful voice front and centre. Heartbeat bemoans man's disrespect for the planet, Hold On is almost, but not quite, a ballad, in places anyway, before the title track gallops in on a tasty riff and powerhouse drumming... Soldier is a great song - with a powerful video to go with it - and is followed by Battle Of Wrath, one of the longer songs, just shy of 6 minutes, Kobra really showing her range on this one! Visionary is short, sharp and catchy with a great little solo, and then Willow is another anthemic track with great drumming and vocal delivery. It's followed by the slow-building, brooding Lost In The Shadows, six minutes and change that, yet again, allows Kobra's vocals to shine, but also let's the band show their chops too - another great solo on this one... They went on to release a fun covers EP highlighting their Canadian inspirations (Triumph, BTO, Rush etc) and then three more albums before seemingly calling it a day, or at least going on hiatus. Kobra seems to be working on a solo projecr, which looks to be a lot less metal than KATL... Also, gents, for the record, she is married to Kamelot vocalist Tommy Karevik. Sorry... Actually, come to think of it, Kamelot look like a good band to join in that regard - their keyboard player Oliver Palotai is married to Simone Simons of Epica...
No 13: Temple of Void - Of Terror and the Supernatural No 14: Ne Obliviscaris - Citadel No 15: Cynic - Kindly Bent to Free Us
No. 13. Mount Carmel - Get Pure. 😃👍. Third studio album. Killer Ohio Power Trio. Fuzz-City. For the love of vintage but fresh hard rock! I got the CD from Bomp Records. I was late to the party for yesterday's pick. 🤷♀. Rock Always! - Heather

Burn Your Fire for No Witness by Angel Olsen Burn Your Fire for No Witness is the sophomore album by Chicago-based singer-songwriter Angel Olsen. Released on the Jagjaguwar label in February 2014, this album showcases a winning shift from her earlier, almost exclusively unadorned folk influences to a more expansive and varied sound, newly weaving in elements of indie rock, psychedelic pop, and alternative country. Produced by John Congleton, who has collaborated with artists as diverse as Baroness, Death Cab for Cutie, and Swans, the album features Olsen's music’s characteristic elements - plaintive, poetic lyrics and haunting vocals conveying a deep sense of vulnerability - but the songs alternate between forlorn country-twang ballads and electrified, fiery full-band anthems. The resulting dynamic range deservedly brought Olsen her first chart placements in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Choice cuts: "Hi-Five,” “Windows” Prior 2014 selections - Playland by Johnny Marr The Take Off and Landing of Everything by Elbow
Today’s favorite pick of 2014 is another brand new album that just arrived at my home on CD. PALE COMMUNION by OPETH. How many times has the topic of “Opeth” been brought up on this podcast…Plenty right? Well, I’ve now finally dove into the Opeth pool with not only the first album that I’ve ever owned by them but the first hearing of their music. Here’s the surprising, for me at least, song breakdown. “Ethereal Rains”: At first, this tune sounds like an eerie Kansas type of composition. Then, I get a whiff of Jethro Tull prog. Mostly, this tune ends up reminding me more of classical Moody Blues than anything else. I consider this a shot across the bow to stay frosty for this album and pay close attention. Grade A- “Cusp of Eternity” is music that makes me think, “ethereal sounding Rush”, not the vocals though. The singing is well within the “normal” vocal range and is very clean sounding. This is progressive rock that I find to be very accessible. I wouldn’t even classify this music as prog metal as it’s not “heavy” at all. I would label this as ethereal prog. Grade A “Moon Above, Sun Below”: As I’m typing these comments I’m listening to this album for the second time. I’m surprised at how much this music has grown on me in such a short span of time. In this song there is some very proficient guitar soloing happening along with interesting original sounding vocal harmonies. All that shifts into a simple vocal with a finger picked acoustic guitar. From there we ease into a delightfully creepy sounding organ music accompanied by a deliciously eerie vocal. Stylistically, this composition is so multi-faceted that it would take many paragraphs to type them all out here. Grade A “Elysian Woes”: The best way that I can think of to describe this number is if “The Moody Blues” deliberately decided to make music that would send a chill up your spine. Grade B+ “Goblin” Despite the song title, this isn’t spooky at all. It sounds like…is this a thing...jazz prog? Grade B+ “River” sounds at the beginning like a song very much in style with Crosby, Stills & Nash. We then get a guitar solo that would fit on most southern rock albums. That leads us into that Moody Blues sound, then into a hard rock guitar dual show. If you’re not out of breath by now get ready for a skillful shift into classic prog. Yeah folks, this is an Alice in Wonderland trip down into the rabbit hole. Grade A- “Voice of Treason”: Three words come to mind while listening to this song…cool, chilling and mysterious. Grade A- “Faith in Others”: Here, the start, middle and end of this number are remarkably consistent all the way through. It’s like a calming Moody Blues written tune. Perhaps that’s the intended final surprise of this album. Grade B+ Cumulative album grade is A-
Great pick. Check out Blackwater Park and Damnation if possible. The latter is pretty mellow and great fall music.
Day 3. Greensky Bluegrass - If Sorrows Swim This band plays heavily on the jam band circuit. What they bring is a modern and updated version of American bluegrass music. What they do slightly different is add a bit of electronics to the groove. It is not unusual to see them opening for Govt Mule, Skynyrd and other southern rock acts too. 1. White Lighter - S/T 2. Teramaze - Esoteric Symbolism 3. Greensky Bluegrass - If Sorrows Swim
Vashti Bunyan - Heartleap
My pick for today: Thom Yorke-Tomorrow's Modern Boxes.
13. Colour Haze - To The Highest Gods We Know After perfecting their sound on an amazing eight album run, the German stoner psych titans pushed things forward with some adventurous experimentation on their eleventh album. It all works, though it may take some adjustment in expectations from longtime followers, as they expand the instrumentation and even venture into modern classical at one point. 14. Lola Colt - Away From The Water 15. Floor - Oblation
Cool Album, also on my List
13. Lacuna Coil -- "Broken Crown Halo" Seventh album by the heavy metal, Goth metal Italian sextet, produced by Jay Baumgardner (Helmet, Seether, Sevendust, etc.). Aggressive and thunderous, front girl Cristina Scabbia's vocals on "Hostage To the Light" and "Infection" are powerful and inspiring as are the arrangements and musicianship throughout -- especially the inclusion of the heavy orchestration on the LP's closer "One Cold Day." Everything fits perfectly. Sadly Maus Biazzi, Pizza Migliore and Cris Mozzati departed after this release (however their next LP "Delerium" from 2016 didn't suffer from their absence -- it's another amazing addition to their catalog).
Hi Gadget.. Fantastic choice.. I remembered their older stuff.. But discovered this one about a year ago and pleased that they were still around.. Hope all is well and have a great day our friend..
Hi Gadget. Never heard of your pick. Interesting article.
The Way- Buzzcocks
Yep, I remember Disco Duck and also The Streak by, is it Ray Stevens?
3. U2- Songs of Innocence 1. The Foo Fighters- Sonic Highway 2. Mike Oldfield- Man on the Rocks
Pick #13: Linkin Park's The Hunting Party. Arguably the heaviest album ever released by Linkin Park and one I admittedly didn't hear until Chester Bennington's tragic death. While the production is a bit rough and it's not quite in my top 3 Linkin Park releases (Hybrid Theory, Meteora, and believe it or not, A Thousand Suns), it's not too horribly far behind either. #15: Pretty Reckless' Going to Hell #14: Blues Pills' Blues Pills #13: Linkin Park's The Hunting Party Honorable Mentions: St Vincent's St Vincent Thank You Scientist's Maps of Non Existent Places Cynic's Kindly Bent to Free Us Foo Fighters' Sonic Highways
My #13 pick for 2014 is an album released on October 27, 2014 and recorded at Steakhouse Studios, North Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA Paradise Studios, Hollywood, CA The Warehouse, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and produced by Bob Rock I'm talking about the fourth studio album by American rock band Black Veil Brides. 13. Exodus - Blood in, Blood Out Favorite Tracks - Blood In, Blood Out, Salt Your Wounds, Collateral Damage, Body Harvest
Hi Tom.. Great choice.. Coming up on mine later on.. Hope all is well and have a great day our friend..
Hey Tom. I checked out Blood In, Blood Out when I was trying to get my album count for 2014 up to 15 so that I could at least complete this series. For me, this music was too extreme and I didn't get very far listening to the album.
Nice pick Tom
Barry Manilow tunes, absolutely.
13. Quantum Enigma - Epica
The one that is immediately coming to mind is Shakedown by Bob Seger, from Beverly Hills Cop ll.
**No Particular Order** 3 Behemoth "The Satanist" 2 Pretty Reckless "Going To Hell" 1 Opeth "Pale Communion"
Cool pick. 🎉
@@tomp8463 Hi Tom.. Thanks.. Usually not my thing.. But i remember hearing this when it was new and blown away.. I was shocked to find out it is 10 years ago already.. Where does time go?? Hope all is well and have a great day our friend..
